For decades, agricultural mechanisation has been widely acknowledged as one of the most effective pathways to increasing productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, creating jobs, and improving food security. Yet despite the country's enormous agricultural potential, mechanisation remains one of the weakest links in Nigeria's food system.

Today, Nigeria operates with fewer than 30,000 tractors serving an estimated 14 million farming families—roughly one tractor for every 467 farming families. National tractor density also stands at just 0.027 horsepower per hectare, significantly below the Food and Agriculture Organization's recommended benchmark of 1.5 horsepower per hectare. The result is a continued reliance on manual labour, low agricultural productivity, and limited opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses to scale.

Recognising both the urgency of these challenges and the opportunities ahead, the Federal Government has prioritised agricultural mechanization through the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme (RH-NAMP), alongside major investments in tractors, implements, and ecosystem development. These efforts underscore the need for a coordinated national framework that aligns policy, investment, innovation, and implementation.

To advance this vision, TracTrac Mechanisation Services Limited, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is convening the High-Level National Dialogue on Agricultural Mechanisation, themed "Anchoring National Food Sovereignty Through Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation Policy, Innovation and Strategic Investment."

The dialogue represents a landmark moment for Nigeria's agricultural sector as stakeholders across government, development finance, academia, the private sector, financial institutions, farmer organisations, and development partners gather to shape the future of agricultural mechanization in Nigeria.

About the High-Level National Dialogue

Building on months of stakeholder consultations and the earlier pre-ratification workshop, the dialogue will provide a national platform to strengthen collaboration, consolidate ideas, and formally ratify the National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy.

The event seeks to develop national consensus around a sustainable agricultural mechanisation ecosystem while creating stronger pathways for investment, innovation, and implementation. It will also strengthen collaboration between government institutions, investors, development partners, technology providers, and practitioners committed to modernising Nigerian agriculture.

Specifically, the dialogue will:

Event Highlights

The two-day programme has been carefully designed to move the conversation from policy to action.

Day One focuses on Youth Inclusion and Prioritization, highlighting the next generation of mechanization leaders through keynote presentations, networking sessions, the Young People in Mechanisation (YPiM) Spotlight, and conversations on creating inclusive opportunities for young entrepreneurs in agriculture.

Day Two brings together senior government officials, development partners, financial institutions, researchers, and private sector leaders for the national policy dialogue. Participants can look forward to:

Why This Dialogue Matters

Agricultural mechanization is no longer simply about tractors and equipment. It is about building resilient food systems, attracting investment, creating dignified jobs for young people, strengthening rural economies, and ensuring Nigeria can sustainably feed its growing population.

The High-Level National Dialogue provides a unique opportunity for decision-makers and ecosystem actors to move beyond conversations and collectively shape the policies, partnerships, and investments needed to accelerate mechanisation across Nigeria. The dialogue is expected to mark the beginning of a more coordinated national approach to mechanisation, one that empowers farmers, supports entrepreneurs, unlocks private capital, and strengthens Nigeria's journey towards food sovereignty.

Be Part of the National Conversation

Whether you are a policymaker, development partner, financial institution, researcher, agribusiness leader, technology provider, equipment manufacturer, farmer organisation, or young entrepreneur, your participation will contribute to shaping the future of agricultural mechanisation in Nigeria.
